Posted March 05, 2018 04:38:10A career in forestry has become a $2.6 billion industry, but there are still millions of people who don’t have a clue how to start.
Forestry jobs in the U.S. are growing rapidly, but for those who want to make it in the industry, the job market is not as stable as many would like.
With unemployment at nearly 11 percent and more than 2 million jobs in danger of disappearing due to climate change, many people who want jobs in forestry are finding it hard to find work.
According to the National Association of State Forestry Commissioners, there are currently 3.2 million registered forestry jobs across the country.
“We have a lot of people that are out of the labor force,” said Kristi Hahn, vice president of the Association of Forestry Commissioners.
It’s a tough job market.
You have to find jobs, you have to do good job, but it’s not as easy as it used to be,” said Laura Krasniuk, a Forest Service employee who lives in rural Illinois.
Krasniak started a forestry internship program with the Texas Forest Service in 2009.
Since then, she has helped hundreds of forestry job seekers find jobs.
She said she’s seen a lot more applicants for jobs with the Forest Service than before.”
We’ve seen a number of people just sort of say, ‘You know, I don’t know where I can go, and I’m just looking for a job,'” she said.
The Forest Service pays the internship fee, and a small portion of that goes to training for new applicants.
After graduating from college in 2014, Krasniak worked in a variety of different jobs, including construction, a construction foreman’s job and an industrial engineer.
Now she is working as a field agent for the Forest Protection Agency, helping to coordinate the placement of forestry companies, train workers and manage the operations.
I’ve had many people that were just looking to be part of the workforce, she said, adding that she’s been able to help out a lot.
Some of the biggest challenges she’s had so far have been people trying to get a job with a large company, she noted.
If you’re not looking to work in forestry, you might as well just take the training offered,” she said while holding a green card.
Hahn said she also thinks a lot about how her internship program will help her and others who are looking for jobs in rural communities.
“The training is very specific, and they really want to give you the most information possible so you can apply the right way.
So we want to put as much information out as we can.
That’s a huge help, and it’s also really helpful for people who are trying to find a job in forestry,” she noted, adding she’s already been helping with the placement process.
Forest Service officials said they expect to see an increase in the number of applications they receive in the coming months.
For now, Kvasnuk and Hahn plan to remain focused on the internship program.
“It’s very important for me that I’m here, that I get out there and I give them as much as I can, so I don’ have to worry about getting a job, and that I can just learn,” Hahn said.
